Where should the rake be placed ?

In response to enquiries raised by several Members regarding the correct placement of rakes, we would like to provide the answer in this issue. As you are no doubt aware, a rake is a moveable obstruction. According to Rule 34 Misc./2, it is recommended that rakes should be left outside of bunkers, in areas where they would least likely affect the movement of the ball. Such a recommendation is, in fact, linked with Rule 24-1 and 20-3d. If a rake is inappropriately placed on the ground next to a bunker, causing the ball to rest against it, particularly on a slope, the player concerned may inevitably cause the ball to move when removing the rake, or cause it to roll into the bunker, thus creating a dispute between players. To avoid such a situation from occurring, our Grounds Staff have been instructed to, wherever possible, place the rakes in a straight line following the direction of play, in areas where they are least likely to affect the movement of the ball — particularly on a slope. If such a situation does occur, the correct procedure to take is firstly to mark the ball, lift it, remove the rake and then replace the ball on the same spot. If this is not possible, the ball should be placed at rest on the nearest spot from the original one, but not nearer to the hole. This will allow play to continue without penalty. Should there be any doubt about any Rule interpretation, please contact our Staff and we will be happy to find out the answer for you.
